As the parent of young children, you likely exercise great caution when driving with them in your vehicle. You’re already aware that car crashes can occur when you least expect them, and that young children’s bodies are more fragile than those of the average adult.
However, there is more to looking after your kids in the car than many realize. Here are three steps that can improve safety for your kids.
1. Understand the distraction risk your children pose
Young children often expect to get their parents’ attention whenever they want it. They may use a range of escalation tactics when you don’t give it to them immediately. That can be annoying when you are at home, but dangerous when you are driving.
Explain to the kids (if they’re old enough) before getting in the car why they need to let you focus on the road. Get them into the habit of being ignored until you can safely pull over and attend to them.
2. Ensure they are properly strapped in
Children need different-sized child seats as they grow. Make sure their car seat’s straps are adjusted so they fit snugly. When the straps are too loose, they won’t do their job. It’s also recommended that you remove bulky outer clothing, such as winter jackets, to get the correct tightness, as otherwise the material will give and allow movement in the event of a crash that could prove harmful.
3. Drive defensively
Assume that other drivers will make mistakes. That is one of the best ways to keep yourself and your children safe on the roads. It allows you to make defensive allowances that can avoid you getting caught out if another driver does happen to make a mistake. For example, instead of assuming the driver who is meant to give way to you at the junction will do so, assume they might not. Slow slightly to give yourself a better chance of braking if they pull out, and eye up whether there is space to move across the lane to avoid them if they do.
If you and your children are injured due to another driver’s negligence, legal guidance can help you understand the steps to claim compensation.
