Tips for patients to enhance their safety while receiving care

On Behalf of | Jan 27, 2026 | Medical Malpractice

Patients trust their medical care team to provide them with proper care. Most patients don’t think that they’ll have to take their safety into their own hands. While it’s true that medical care team members should always keep patient safety first, patients can take steps to enhance the chance that they receive optimal care.

Understanding a few things that you can do may be beneficial if you’re seeking medical care.

Provide accurate information

Accurate information about your current symptoms and medical history can help your doctors to properly diagnose you. Even things that you don’t feel were important can be critical in some cases. It may be beneficial to bring a written list or have a note on your phone that you can refer to when you seek medical care.

Communicate with your providers

Communicate with your medical care team as much as possible. Some patients are skeptical about asking questions when they’re speaking with doctors; however, asking questions can help you to learn about your diagnosis and treatment plan. You can also ask about medication side effects and exactly how each one will treat your condition.

Ensure providers practice hygiene

Infections are a common concern in healthcare settings. If you’re receiving care, make sure the providers wash their hands before they come into contact with you. Sometimes, hand sanitizer is appropriate, but washing their hands is always the best option. Using other personal protective equipment, such as masks, gloves and gowns can also provide layers of protection for you.

Bring someone to help you

In some cases, having another person with you during appointments can help to protect you. That person can ask questions on your behalf or keep a record of what the doctor is saying.

The onus is on the medical team to provide care that meets or exceeds the standard of care. Patients who don’t receive proper care may opt to pursue a claim for compensation through a medical malpractice claim. These cases can be complex, so it may be beneficial to work with someone familiar with these matters so they can explain the options and assist you as you work through the process.
