Did a surgeon leave something behind after an operation?

On Behalf of | Nov 18, 2025 | Medical Malpractice

Surgery requires absolute precision for the safety of the patient. Medical professionals create a sterile environment and must comply with current care standards.

When everything goes smoothly, surgery often offers the best prognosis and fastest recovery possible for patients with complex medical challenges. When things go wrong, the situation can have dire implications for the patient.

Some surgical mistakes are minor and have minimal consequences in the long run. Others are likely to have a devastating medical impact. If a surgeon leaves foreign objects behind in a patient, that could constitute malpractice.

Retained items cause complications

Items physically left behind inside a patient’s body can cause several serious medical issues. The object itself is a risk factor. It can cause an infection or severe tissue inflammation. If the object is rigid or sharp, it can cause trauma to the nearby tissue, especially as the patient begins moving when they come out of anesthesia.

Retained foreign bodies usually force medical professionals to perform a second surgery to remove the object. Two procedures in close proximity to one another can increase a patient’s overall risk levels and the timeline for their recovery.

Surgeons and their support staff should account for every object used in a surgery before finishing the procedure. When they fail to do so, their mistakes may constitute medical malpractice. The patient affected by their negligence could have grounds for a lawsuit.

Taking legal action in response to surgical errors can compensate patients and their family members. When surgeons make egregious mistakes, like leaving items in patients, holding them accountable is a reasonable response.
