You always face risks from other drivers on the road. To this end, it is important to understand which drivers present the greatest risk and are most likely to cause a serious accident.
To some degree, it depends on how you look at the statistics. Middle-aged drivers tend to be involved in the most accidents simply because there are more of them on the road. But if you look at the rate at which drivers cause fatal accidents, you will see that it is highest for teen drivers. Their overall age group is vastly smaller, but that just means that their accident rate is disproportionately high. Why is this?
They are still gaining experience
Unfortunately, this is a very difficult problem to fix. A major part of the issue is that the youngest drivers have the least experience on the road. This can lead to all sorts of mistakes as they learn and develop their skills, and older drivers would not necessarily commit the same errors.
But doing something like raising the driving age would not necessarily help. You can already see that the fatal accident rate goes down as drivers get into their 20s. But if the driving age was raised to 21, for example, that would likely just mean that drivers from 21 to 24 had the least amount of experience. Odds are that they would then have the highest fatal accident rate.
The reality is that it takes time to become a proficient and safe driver, and some young drivers are going to cause serious accidents as they learn. Those who suffer injuries or lose loved ones in these crashes need to know how to seek financial compensation.
